WELL PLAYED
BY KATRINA RAMOS ATIENZA
Patrice Reyes is a college junior with good grades, football fame, and finally has caught the attention of her longtime crush. Life’s going well—until Paul Dalmacio, a sharp-tongued Applied Math major, enters the picture and seems to hate everything about her world. Why does it bother her so much?
As her best friend navigates a “will-they-won’t-they” romance and their freshman roommate dives headfirst into college life, Patrice must juggle academics, sports, and social drama—all while keeping her scholarship.
A modern Pride and Prejudice set in a Philippine university, Well Played is a story of friendship, rivalry, and looking beyond first impressions.
REVIEWS:
“I had so much fun matching the characters in Katrina Ramos Atienza’s retelling of Pride and Prejudice to the original. I liked Patrice and her wit, loyalty to her friends, fierceness, and passion for her sport, while Paul, with the angst, grumpiness, and all the hidden layers, is such a true Darcy.”
— Ana Tejano, author of Keep the Faith and Fall Like Rain
“Like with Austen’s tale, the romance is a slow burn. It has football, math, and college org shenanigans, set in a picturesque university. All in all, a really fun read.”
— Jay E. Tria, author of You Out of Nowhere and The Playlist series
EXCERPT:
“Mr. Paul Dalmacio,” she said, reading the card. “An Applied Math major! Guys, we have a rare specimen in our midst. What brings you to the Liberal Arts building?”
The attention, instead of bringing a grin to the man’s face, turned his expression even sterner.
There were a few awkward moments before he spoke: “We’re required to take a writing elective.”
“I know that, Mr. Dalmacio, but usually your types go for the research and analysis courses. But this is Expository Writing. Papers every week, and no short ones, too.”
He sniffed irritably. “I solve complex math equations daily. I’m sure I can manage… papers every week.” He almost spat out the last three words.
Patrice rolled her eyes, and Bit-Bit’s eyebrow arched.
