Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences introduces students to the nature of the social sciences, its emergence, and the various disciplines that comprise the fi eld. The book also explains the importance of qualitative and quantitative methods of inquiry as well as the multidisciplinal and interdisciplinal approaches as methods of looking at society. It also discusses the dominant approaches and methodologies used to analyze society, which are classified into three methodologies: namely, positivist, interpretive, and critical social sciences. Apart from illustrating Western models, the book brings to light the significant contributions of Filipino social thinkers from the 19th century to the proponents of indigenous social sciences in contemporary times. The book underscores the role of the social sciences in the real world by investigating certain societal issues and applying the various approaches that are relevant in addressing these problems.
About the Authors
MARY DOROTHY dL. JOSE is assistant professor of the Department of Social Sciences, University of the Philippines (UP) Manila. She obtained her bachelor of arts in history and her master’s degree in Asian studies from UP. She is a PhD candidate of the Philippine Studies Tri-college Program in the same university. She has coauthored social studies textbooks from elementary to high school. She was an awardee of Gawad Likasyan para sa Pagpapalaganap ng Kasaysayan in 2013. She was a recipient of UP Manila–PGH Gender Advocate Award in 2013 and 2014.
JEROME A. ONG is assistant professor and chair of the Department of Social Sciences in UP Manila. He fi nished his bachelor of arts degree in social sciences (major in area studies) at the same university and his master’s in history at UP Diliman, where he is fi nishing his doctorate in Philippine studies. He was recipient of two Gawad Chancellor citations from UP Manila, namely Pinakamahusay na Guro and Pinakamahusay na Mananaliksik. In 2011 and 2012, he was named Outstanding Teacher of the College of Arts and Sciences, UP Manila. He was also recipient of UP Centennial Faculty Grant Award and National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Young Historian’s Prize. In 2014, he was awarded the UP Manila Gawad Chancellor for Outstanding Teacher.
