Description

Behind the thoroughly accessible work of J.I.F. Teodoro. lies a sense of perfect grounding in the yin and yang of daily affairs. A love of nature and of the senses (which respond most avidly and are wide awake to its gifts), is coupled with a contemplative sensibility so that we are reminded of how all things (the fleet and brilliant, just as the plain and dull) have other aspects transcending bodies, genders, and journeyman in search of true fulfillment and transformation- desires. A mermaid may be a princess, or a princess may be a which at least in this world may occur when readers allow these tales into their hearts and minds.

I first came across J.I.E. Teodoro's writing in the mid-90s. It was a sampling of fiery gay themed poetry written in Filipino. What struck me back then was the seemingly seamless volition of Teodoro's thoughts delivered in the national vernacular. He was so at ease with the Filipino language, sharing his passionate thoughts with an almost playful surgically painful accuracy. In this collection of selected pieces of his column "Edukasyong Pinoy," which appeared in Bandillo ng Palawan Teodoro delivers his thoughts on education (he is one of the country's youngest and best literature teachers), showbiz love life and personal travails with the same fearlessness he showed in his award-winning poems and fiction. He took commonplace subjects of the heart and made them sparkle and delicious to the reading tongue, there was no dull moment Teodoro has forged his sensitive and romantic nature into a brave celebration of a non-metrocentric social milieu in a non- colonial language
