The Walk: Stories by Joy Dayrit

Author: Joy Dayrit

Reading Joy Dayrit's stories, one recalls Jayne Ann Philips' hard-edged minimalism ('Scoring') and Italo Calvino's cosmic playfulness ('A Bedtime Art Story'), but the reasonances, in the end, are grace notes, an one can delight in these stories without the need of ponderous scholarship. But Dayrit's grim humor has been deeply thought out and deeply felt, and hers is a fresh, exhilirating and liberating voice in Philippine fiction, saving us from stodgy realism and self-obsession. As a dancer on the page, Dayrit exhibits sure, terrific footwork.
