The Cry of Balintawak: A Contrived Controversy

Author: Soledad Borromeo-Buehler

For nearly a century, the cry of Balintawak--a major turning point in the Philippine history--has been the subject of controversy. The author aims to help resolve this controversy by analyzing eyewitness accounts and contemporary documents heretofore unquoted, misquoted, or misrepresented. In her reconstruction for what transpired in Balintawak---when the Katipuneros, led by Andres Bonifacio, assembled in Pook Kangkong, 22 to 26 August 1896---the author demonstrate the the "Cry of Pugad Lawin" is a hoax. Further, the author resolves the question on when or where cedulas were torn and when and where the initial skirmish between the revolutionaries and the Spanish forces took place. Annotated documents, most of which have been translated into English, are presented for reference.
