Until his death on 15 October 1988 at the age of 40, Alfredo Navarro Salanga was one of the Philippines; most accomplished writers. He wrote poetry, fiction, essays, and drama; co-founded the Manila Critics Circle, the Philippine Literary Arts Council and the Philippine Board on Books for Young People; edited newspapers and anthologies; and wrote columns that had a wide readership. His books include The Birthing of Hanibal Valdez (a novel), The Aglipay Question:Literary and Historical Studies, and Turtle Voices in Uncertain Weather: Poems 1980-1988.
